More than 90 percent have a plain white background. The few pages that actually do use images use very discrete and fast loading images for the purpose. When picking the desired color - whether it be plain or an image - you should also consider the fact that some colors work with almost any other color - while there are colors that only work with a limited number of contrasts. If you use green on a red background, it will look different than if you use the same green on a blue background. Without digging into deep theories about colors, we will make a note on the fact that white, gray and black colors tend to be balanced against other colors. That is, white, gray and black work with any of the colors in the rainbow. This is probably the reason that white, black and gray are the most widely used background colors found on the net.

Background Basics

In life, we tend to ignore what's in the background. Of course, we do that at our own peril, but we do it nonetheless. On the Web, however, a background can have a huge impact on the look, feel, and "branding," of your Web site.

Bigger Image Backgrounds isn't Necessarily Better

One mistake people make when creating backgrounds is to create huge backgrounds. They think it needs to be very wide and tall, so it will cover the background of all screen sizes. But in graphics, bigger always means slower, so this approach is usually impractical. The next mistake is to make background images that are too small. Browsers can "tile" (or repeat) smaller graphics across and down the background of a page until they fill the entire browser window. But this, too, can slow down your site.

A background image can be as small as a single pixel, and in the past Web designers created extremely tiny (therefore supposedly fast) images that the browser would tile. But there's a catch: Tiling the background image takes processing power from your computer. The smaller the tile, the more times it has to be repeated. If you've ever been to a Web site and noticed the background seemed to appear slowly and scrolling was more like crawling, that page could have had a very small background image and your computer and browser were straining to repeat it.

Computer Backgrounds

However, these default wallpaper was a bit boring. For this you need something that canYour computer screen scream of excitement and fun.

How to Create a Computer Background

A computer background or desktop wallpaper is the image you see on the screen behind your program and document icons. By default, this picture can be a solid color, a generic landscape or worst of all, an advertisement. You can easily change this to a graphic of your children, favorite sports team or hobby by creating your own background.

  • Step 1: Find out the size of the background you need to make. Right-click on any free area of the screen and choose "Properties". The Display Properties dialogue appears. Click the "Settings" tab and write down the screen resolution listed in the lower-left. This example uses a resolution of 1024 by 768. Click "Cancel" to close the dialogue.

  • Step 2: Gather a picture or two that you would like to use as your desktop background. You can upload one from your camera, or look for suitable images using your favorite search engine.

  • Step 3: Use your favorite art program to create a document with the dimensions you wrote from the Properties dialog (i.e., 1024 by 768).

  • Step 4: Open the picture(s) you would like to use as your background. If the picture is bigger than the document window you created, reduce the image to fit. If you would like to use several smaller pictures, fill the document window first with a dark solid color.

  • Step 5: Copy your picture(s) to paste into the document window. If your desktop icons are clustered onto one side of the screen, flip or otherwise adjust the pictures so that the main image appears on the opposite side.

  • Step 6: Save your image into the most compact size available so that it loads quickly.

  • Step 7: Apply the image as your desktop background by right-clicking on any free area of the screen and choosing "Properties". The "Display Properties" dialogue appears. Click the "Desktop" tab and then the "Browse" button to display a File dialogue. Browse to your image file and double-click to load it. Your image appears as a preview in the dialogue. Click the "Apply" button to close the dialogue and put your image in the background.
